FREIGHT CLAIM IMPORTANT VICTORY AT HOME OVER IOWA
Freight hold Iowa scoreless in second half, win 55-13 over Barnstormers
FISHERS- The Fishers Freight hosted the Iowa Barnstormers for the second time this season in their third meeting of the year. After winning the first two matchups, Fishers looked for the season sweep and were successful, defeating Iowa 55-13.
FIRST QUARTER
The Freight took the ball first and on their first drive, Josiah King ran the ball in for a touchdown. After a good kick from Calum Sutherland, Fishers went up 7-0.
On the next drive, Iowa’s quarterback Dante Aviles-Santos was sacked after a bad snap. He lost possession of the ball, which Fishers’ Tre Smalls picked up. This gave the Freight the ball again.
Eventually, they scored as King ran in his second touchdown of the game. Sutherland had a good extra point, giving Fishers a 14-0 lead.
Iowa scored their first touchdown of the game with about three minutes to go in the first quarter. After a missed extra point attempt by Trevor Spaulding, the Freight led 14-6.
Just before the quarter ended, Freight quarterback Felix Harper ran the ball in himself for their third touchdown of the night. After another good kick from Sutherland, the Freight went up 21-6.
SECOND QUARTER
Iowa scored a touchdown on a long throw to Demonte Martin in the end zone. Spaulding’s extra point kick was successful, keeping the Freight at a 21-13 lead.
With under five minutes to go, Iowa attempted a field goal but it was blocked by Fishers. This gave them a late first down. One play later, Josiah King scored his third touchdown of the game, running the ball into the end zone. Sutherland tacked on an extra point, and Fishers took a 28-13 lead.
Sutherland came out for the next kickoff and successfully recovered an onside kick. Iowa challenged the play but it was upheld and Fishers got the ball. The Freight were able to convert that into a touchdown with just eighteen seconds to go in the half. Josiah King ran it in after a long pass from Harper to Coulter.
That made it 35-13 in favor of the Freight, which is how the first half ended.
THIRD QUARTER
It appeared the Barnstormers turned the ball over on downs on the first drive of the second half, however Iowa challenged the call and it was overturned. They were awarded a first down.
Fishers took a 42-13 lead when Jordan Davis scored another touchdown and Sutherland had a good kick.
On the Barnstormer’s next drive, Fishers intercepted the ball when Nicholas Lenon picked it up and ran in towards the end zone but was tackled. Davis scored his second touchdown of the game on the next snap. After a rare missed kick, the Freight went up 48-13.
FOURTH QUARTER
Iowa was held to a field goal attempt on their first possession of the quarter, however it was blocked again by Darius Long. Jaylin Swan took possession of the ball in the end zone, and scored a touchdown. After another good kick from Sutherland, they took a 55-13 lead.
Iowa turned the ball over on downs with under ten minutes to go in the fourth quarter. The Freight replaced Harper with Davis Black at quarterback on the next play.
Fishers gave the ball right back with a fumble recovery by the Barnstormers. They turned the ball over the Freight once again. They gave the ball back to Iowa after one play when they recovered the ball.
Iowa could not score again, giving the ball back to the Freight with 1:50 to go in regulation.
With one minute to go, the Freight knelt to expire the remainder of the clock. They claimed a 55-13 win over the Barnstormers, holding them scoreless in the second half, and setting a new franchise record for largest win margin, breaking their record of 41 points set last season when the Freight defeated Iowa to close out their season.
